Canadian, Jack Chambers, painter, film,
Jack Chambers was undoubtedly one of the key Canadian painters from the last half of the 20th century. He was exceptional in his drive to triumph regionalism not on sentimental grounds but for the reality of living and working in his hometown of London, Ontario. Yet for all his contributions to painting on a national and local level, there is one aspect of Chamber's career that remains largely unknown. Between 1964 and 1970 Chambers released a series of experimental movies. These are what Chambers referred to as "personal" films, made to liberate his own feelings at a time when he felt the need to escape the professional committment to paintings. As Ross Woodman writes, the films were attempts to "wake up an audience which he feared his painting might now be putting to sleep."
